What Students Need to Do
- Students connect volume to multiplication for one right rectangular prism and to addition for figures made from nonoverlapping prisms. They solve mathematical and real-world problems with whole-number edge lengths.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student finds a 6-by-4-by-3 prism's volume as 72 cubic units and explains the three factors. For a composite solid, the student finds each prism's volume and adds the parts once.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add edge lengths, report square units, or count only visible cubes. They may multiply dimensions from different component prisms or double-count a shared face as volume.
How to Assess It
- Give students a rectangular-prism model and a two-prism composite solid with whole-number dimensions. Ask them to find both volumes and explain when multiplication and addition are used.
