What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students understand that every property of a shape category also applies to shapes in its subcategories. They use shared attributes to explain overlapping classifications rather than assigning only one name.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains that every square is a rectangle, every rectangle is a parallelogram, and every parallelogram is a trapezoid under the inclusive definition. The student carries each broader category's properties into the narrower category.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat shape categories as separate boxes or think extra properties remove a shape from a broader group. They may use an exclusive trapezoid definition and reject parallelograms from that category.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to list every applicable category for a square and explain why properties from rectangle, parallelogram, and trapezoid categories still apply.
