What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret fraction addition as joining parts of the same whole and subtraction as separating parts from that whole. They connect the operation to unit fractions and keep the whole consistent.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains 3/8 + 2/8 as joining three eighth-size parts and two more eighth-size parts to make 5/8. The student models 7/10 minus 3/10 as removing three tenths.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add or subtract denominators even though the part size stays the same. They may combine fractions that refer to different-sized wholes or confuse the number of parts with each part's size.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to model and solve 4/6 minus 1/6, then explain what was separated and why the denominator stayed 6.
