What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and record times when the minute hand points to 12 or 6. They connect those clock positions to digital notation and the phrases o'clock and half past.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads 4:00 and 4:30 on both analog and digital clocks. At 4:30, the student places the minute hand on 6 and the hour hand halfway between 4 and 5.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the two hands as interchangeable or read the number under the minute hand as minutes. At a half-hour, they may point the hour hand directly at the next hour.
How to Assess It
- Ask the student to show 7:30 on an analog clock, write the digital time, and describe it using the phrase half past.
