What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine an Algebra II function from context as an explicit expression, recursive process, or calculation steps. Linear, quadratic, exponential, and sequence contexts are included, with sequences written recursively and explicitly in subscript notation.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student chooses a form that fits the context and defines every quantity and initial value. Explicit and recursive forms generate matching values where both apply.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write a recurrence without an initial term or an explicit rule with the wrong index. They may choose a linear rule for multiplicative change or ignore a constant component.

How to Assess It

Give an account starting at $500 and growing 3 percent yearly. Ask for explicit and recursive definitions in subscript notation and the meaning of each parameter.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use context and change cards to build explicit expressions, recursive rules, and step-by-step procedures.

  2. Ask students when a recursive form communicates a context more naturally than an explicit form.

  3. Play representation match with linear, quadratic, exponential, explicit-sequence, and recursive-sequence rules.

  4. Model a cooling object by combining ambient temperature with exponential decay and interpret both components.
