What Students Need to Do: Students use function notation in Algebra I, evaluate functions only at inputs in the domain, and interpret notation in context. They distinguish an input from the corresponding output.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student evaluates symbolic and numerical inputs accurately and checks domain restrictions first. In context, the student explains what a statement such as f(3) equals 12 means with quantities and units.
Common Misconceptions: Students may read f(x) as multiplication, substitute into only one occurrence of x, or ignore a restricted input. They may state a numerical value without interpreting its contextual meaning.
How to Assess It: Let f(t) give water depth in centimeters t minutes after filling begins, with 0 at most t at most 10. Ask for f(4), its meaning, and whether f(12) is defined.

Lesson moves

Feed input cards through a paper function machine and record outputs with correct notation.
Ask students to explain the difference between f, f(x), x, and a specific value such as f(3).
Play domain gate by deciding whether input cards may enter each function before evaluating.
Interpret function values from a temperature, cost, or distance model using quantities and units.
