What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use varied transitions to connect and distinguish claims, counterclaims, reasons, evidence, and complex ideas. Transitions create cohesion and reveal logic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student selects transitions that accurately signal concession, contrast, cause, qualification, example, or consequence. Paragraphs connect without repetitive or mechanical phrasing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may insert formal transitions that do not match the relationship. They may use however for every contrast or rely on transitions to hide missing reasoning.
How to Assess It
- Give an argument passage with transitions removed. Ask students to add varied signals and explain the logical relationship each one expresses.
