What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, or research. They apply grade-level reading skills to explain how the evidence supports their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student makes a focused claim or reflection and chooses relevant details from the text. The student explains the connection between each detail and the idea it supports.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy a quotation without explaining it or choose details that are interesting but irrelevant. They may summarize the whole text instead of supporting a focused idea.
How to Assess It
- Give a short literary or informational passage and one focused question. Ask students to answer with one relevant detail and two sentences explaining how it supports the response.

Ways to Teach It
Sort evidence strips under claim cards, then defend one placement with a sentence from the text.
Ask students which of two details better supports a claim and require a written explanation.
Play evidence match by pairing claims with quotations and earning points only for accurate reasoning.
Use a local news article to support a recommendation about a school or community issue.
