What Students Need to Do: Students recognize when there are more wants than available money, time, or materials. They choose one option and name what they cannot have.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can make a choice in a simple situation with limited resources. The student can explain, using because, why both options are not possible.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think wanting something means they will get it. They may also believe choosing one item does not require giving up another item.
How to Assess It: Give each student one paper coin and show two classroom store items. Ask, “Which item will you choose, and what must you give up?”

Lesson moves

Give each student three counters to spend on pictured snacks with different prices, then have students explain their choices.
Ask, “If you can choose a class pet or a class garden, which would you pick and why?”
Play Choice Corners by labeling two corners with options, then let students choose a corner and name the option they gave up.
Show a grocery flyer and plan which two foods to buy with five paper dollars.
