What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use area models and rearranged shapes to show why the side lengths of a right triangle satisfy the Pythagorean relationship. They also reverse the reasoning to decide when three side lengths form a right triangle.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can label a visual model and connect each region’s area to the side lengths. They can explain both directions of the reasoning and use the converse to identify a right triangle.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the relationship for every triangle, not only right triangles. They may mistake either leg for the hypotenuse or think one numerical example proves the rule. Some confuse a statement with its converse.

How to Assess It

Give students a diagram of four congruent right triangles arranged inside a square. Ask them to label the areas and explain how the diagram proves the side relationship.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut four congruent right triangles from paper, arrange them two ways inside a square, and compare the remaining areas.

  2. Write an explanation answering: Why does rearranging the same four triangles show that the two smaller square areas equal the larger square area?

  3. Sort side-length cards into right triangles and non-right triangles, then match each right triangle to a labeled area model.

  4. Measure a cardboard frame’s sides and diagonal, then use the converse to decide whether one corner is square.
