Georgia 7.PAR.4.5

Math7th GradePatterning & Algebraic Reasoning

The Standard

Use context to explain what a point (x, y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0, 0) and (1, r) where r is the unit rate.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Recognize proportional relationships in relevant, mathematical problems; represent, solve, and explain these relationships with tables, graphs, and equations.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect each plotted point to the quantities in a situation. They explain the meaning of both coordinates, including the starting point and the point that shows the unit rate.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a graph and its context, students explain a point using both quantities and their units. They explain that (0, 0) represents zero of both quantities and that (1, r) gives the unit rate.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the coordinates or leave out the units. They may call (0, 0) the unit rate or miss that the y-value at x = 1 gives the unit rate.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A babysitter earns $12 per hour. Explain what (0, 0), (1, 12), and (4, 48) mean on the graph.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use cups and counters to model three counters per cup, then plot totals and label what each coordinate means.

  2. Ask, “What do (0, 0) and (1, 3) tell us about cups and counters, and why?”

  3. Give pairs a card sort matching situations, graph points, and written interpretations, then have them correct one mismatch.

  4. Use a grocery price graph and ask students to interpret the cost of zero pounds, one pound, and four pounds.
