What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students represent repeated gains, losses, rates, and scaling with multiplication of positive and negative fractions or decimals. They calculate the product and explain its meaning in the situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose multiplication for a situation involving equal changes or scaling. They find the correct product, include units, and explain what its sign and size mean in context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think any negative factor makes the product negative, even when both factors are negative. They may ignore units or choose multiplication just because two numbers appear in the problem.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “A submarine descends 3.5 meters per minute for 4 minutes. Write a multiplication equation and explain the product’s sign.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use a floor number line to model four temperature drops of 2.5 degrees, then write and explain the matching product.

  2. Ask students to explain how 3 × negative 4 differs from negative 3 × negative 4 in a realistic situation.

  3. Play a card match game linking rational number products to equations, answers, and short situation cards.

  4. Give pairs a bank statement with repeated $4.75 fees, then have them calculate and explain the total account change.
