Georgia 5.GSR.8.2
The Standard
Determine, through exploration and investigation, that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Examine properties of polygons and rectangular prisms, classify polygons by their properties, and discover volume of right rectangular prisms.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students classify polygons into broad groups and smaller groups using properties such as parallel sides, equal sides, and right angles. They explain why properties of a broad group also apply to every shape in its smaller groups.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place polygons correctly in a classification hierarchy and support each placement with defining properties. They explain that a square inherits the properties of rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, and quadrilaterals.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat shape categories as separate, so they say a square cannot also be a rectangle or rhombus. They may classify by appearance instead of using sides, angles, and parallel lines.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A square is classified as a rectangle. Name two rectangle properties every square must have, and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Sort cutout quadrilaterals into nested hoops labeled quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, and square, then record properties shared within each hoop.
Discuss this claim: Every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square; support your answer with defining properties.
Play Polygon Guess Who using property cards, eliminating shapes after clues such as four equal sides or two pairs of parallel sides.
Photograph a window, tile, or sign, then place its shape in a polygon hierarchy and list inherited properties.
