Georgia 2.GSR.7.2
The Standard
Identify at least one line of symmetry in everyday objects to describe each object as a whole.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Draw and partition shapes and other objects with specific attributes, and conduct observations of everyday items and structures to identify how shapes exist in the world.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find a line that divides a familiar object into matching mirror-image parts. They use the matching parts to describe the object as a whole.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can draw at least one correct line of symmetry on a familiar object. They explain that the parts on both sides match like mirror images.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any line that splits an object into two pieces is a line of symmetry. They may also expect every object to have symmetry or overlook horizontal and diagonal lines.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a leaf, a spoon, and an uneven sock. Ask: “Draw a line of symmetry where possible, then explain how you know.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students paper shapes to fold, then trace any fold where both sides match exactly.
Show a butterfly picture and ask, “Where is its line of symmetry, and how does that line help describe the whole butterfly?”
Play a card sort where students group object pictures as symmetrical or not symmetrical, then check each choice with a mirror.
Take a classroom symmetry walk and sketch three objects that have matching sides, such as windows, chairs, or cabinet doors.
