What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students divide round and rectangular shapes into equal parts for two or four people. They check that every person would receive the same amount.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can draw or fold a shape to make two or four same-size parts. They can explain why the parts are fair shares and identify examples that are not fair.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the pieces but ignore whether they are the same size. They may think equal shares must face the same direction. Some draw four lines when asked to make four shares.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a blank circle and rectangle. Ask them to split the circle fairly between two children and the rectangle fairly among four children, then explain how they checked.

Ways to Teach It
Give students paper circles and rectangles to fold and cut for fair sharing between two people, then four people.
Show three divided rectangles and ask: Which shares are fair, and how do you know? Students explain in one sentence.
Play Equal Share Sort: students sort shape cards into halves, fourths, or not equal, then justify one choice to a partner.
Plan how to cut a sandwich or round tortilla so two or four children receive the same amount.
