What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify who a message is for and what that person needs to know. With support, they choose helpful details, pictures, words, and layouts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a topic and audience, a student creates a clear page with a useful picture, label, or sentence. The student can explain why those choices fit the reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think more details always make a message better, or choose a favorite detail instead of a useful one. They may use the same words and pictures for every audience.

How to Assess It

Ask students to make a sign for new kindergarten students showing how to wash hands. Have them explain how their picture and words help the reader.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs playground safety picture and word cards, then have them build one poster for kindergarteners and another for adults.

  2. Read two classroom signs aloud and ask, “Which sign would help a new student more, and what did the author choose?”

  3. Play Audience Match by pairing message cards with audience cards, then changing one word or picture to make each message clearer.

  4. Have students create a cubby label for a substitute teacher, using a clear name, simple picture, and easy-to-read lettering.
