What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify who made a text, who it is for, and why it was made. They use picture, word, and setting clues. They create texts for a clear audience and purpose, then decide whether those texts work.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a familiar text, the student names its creator, intended audience, and likely purpose using picture or word clues. The student creates a simple text for a named audience and purpose. They can say whether it works and suggest one change.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every text is a story or that every text is meant for them. They may confuse the author with the audience. They may guess the purpose from the topic while ignoring pictures, words, and where the text appears.

How to Assess It

Show a school lunch menu. Ask each student, “Who made this, who uses it, what is it for, and what clue helped you?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a picture book, menu, sign, and invitation to sort by purpose, then name the intended audience.

  2. Read a class note and ask, “Who wrote it, who needs it, and how can you tell?”

  3. Play Purpose Match with cards showing texts, audiences, and purposes, and have students build matching sets.

  4. Have students make a hallway sign for younger children, then test whether classmates understand what to do.
