What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out who a book, picture, sign, or message is meant for and why it was made. They create simple texts using words and pictures that fit the reader and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name the likely audience and purpose of a book, sign, note, or picture. They can create a simple message with words and pictures that fit a chosen reader and reason.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the audience is a character in the text. They may also believe every text is made only to entertain or that pictures do not carry meaning.
How to Assess It
- Show students a birthday invitation. Ask, “Who is this for, why was it made, and what detail helped you decide?”

Ways to Teach It
Students sort picture books, signs, invitations, and labels into groups labeled tell, entertain, ask, and warn.
Read a class note and ask, “Who should read this, and what does the writer want that person to know or do?”
Play Audience Match by pairing message cards, such as lunch menus or party invitations, with the people most likely to read them.
Students make a handwashing sign for the classroom sink, choosing words and pictures that kindergarten classmates can understand.
