What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name one clear reading or writing goal, such as pointing under words or adding labels to a drawing. They check progress, discuss what helped, and adjust the goal when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain a current goal and point to work that shows progress. They use a picture checklist or teacher feedback to choose a reasonable next step.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a broad wish, such as “be a better reader,” instead of a specific action. They may think changing a goal means failure or that one successful try means the goal is finished.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to complete this oral exit ticket: “My goal was ___. Today I ___. Next I will ___.” Have them point to evidence in their work.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture goal cards, then have each child choose one and add a sticker after showing the skill during reading or writing.

  2. Place two work samples side by side and ask, “What improved, and what should this writer or reader try next?”

  3. Play Goal Match by pairing work samples with goal cards such as spaces between words, picture details, or pointing under each word.

  4. Share how athletes track practice goals, then let students chart five days of reading or writing practice with drawings and check marks.
