What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students arrange words and build sentences for a specific listener and purpose. They choose statements, questions, commands, repetition, or short sentences to make meaning clear.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a purpose and listener, a student can dictate or write a clear sentence with sensible word order. The student can explain why a question, statement, or command fits the task.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy speech exactly, producing long strings joined by “and.” They may use mixed-up word order or choose a sentence type without considering the listener.

How to Assess It

Give this exit prompt: “Make a sign that reminds classmates to walk in the hall. Write or dictate one sentence, then tell why it works.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to arrange into a clear classroom reminder, then have them change it into a question or command.

  2. Compare “You can sit here” and “Sit here, please”; ask which works better for a new student and why.

  3. Play Audience Match: students draw a purpose card, then say a question, statement, or command for the pictured listener.

  4. Create lunchroom signs for younger classmates, using short commands and polite words that make each message easy to follow.
