What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize that written words are made to tell readers something. They use a familiar book, label, sign, or note to explain the message it carries.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a familiar text, a student tells its basic message and who might read it. The student points to the written words as the source of the message, even when an adult reads them aloud.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think only pictures have meaning and print is decoration. Others think every piece of print names an object, rather than giving a direction, sharing information, or telling a story.
How to Assess It
- Read this note aloud: “Please put the blocks on the shelf.” Ask, “What message does the note give, and how do you know?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a stop sign, lunch menu, name tag, and storybook, then have them point to the print and tell each message.
Read a short class note aloud and ask, “What does the writer want us to know or do?”
Play Message Match by pairing simple printed signs, such as “Wash hands,” with pictures of places where each sign belongs.
Walk through the school, stop at three signs, and have students explain the message each sign gives to people.
