What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose an idea order that makes sense for a specific writing task and reader. They use paragraphing, transitions, headings, dialogue, or other features that fit the kind of text.

- Students organize ideas in a clear pattern that suits the writing task. They use features such as headings, transitions, sections, or dialogue purposefully. They can explain how their choices help a specific reader.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the five-paragraph essay as the right structure for every text. They may add transitions or headings without creating a clear sequence of ideas. They may also choose features they like instead of features that help the reader.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Plan an email asking the principal to change a school policy. List the idea order, two useful text features, and why each choice fits.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a mixed set of paragraph strips from an article, then have them arrange the strips and defend their sequence.
Ask students to explain how they would organize the same topic for a friend, a principal, and a local newspaper.
Play a matching game where students pair writing tasks with structures such as chronology, cause and effect, comparison, or problem and solution.
