What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how writers explain information through definitions, examples, facts, comparisons, and text structures. They explain why a technique works, then use it in their own expository writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify techniques such as definitions, examples, facts, comparisons, and cause and effect. They explain each technique’s purpose and use suitable techniques in their own clear, organized writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize the topic instead of explaining how the writer presents it. They may name a technique, such as examples or definitions, without showing its effect on clarity.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph and ask: “Name one expository technique, cite the words that show it, and explain how it helps the reader.”

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart an article, then have groups sort sections by technique and rebuild the article in a clear order.
Ask students to explain which technique best clarifies a difficult topic, then support their choice with a specific example.
Play Technique Match by pairing paragraph cards with labels such as definition, example, comparison, cause and effect, and problem and solution.
Have students create a one-page guide explaining a school procedure with facts, examples, definitions, headings, and transitions.
