What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read two works written during the same historical era and state the message each conveys about one issue. They explain similarities and differences in how plot, character, imagery, tone, or structure develop those messages, using evidence from both texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state a clear thematic claim that fits both works. They cite details from each text and explain how choices such as tone, imagery, character, or structure shape each writer’s message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a topic, such as freedom, instead of stating a full message about it. They may compare plots only, ignore the historical period, or assume both writers present the message in the same way.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short excerpts from the same literary period. Ask: "What message connects these texts, and what is one difference in how each writer develops it?"

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two Harlem Renaissance poems and colored sticky notes to mark matching themes, contrasting tones, and evidence from each poem.
Ask, "How do the writers’ different choices shape their messages about identity?" and require one quoted detail from each text.
Run a theme-match relay where teams pair excerpt cards, then earn points by naming one similarity and one difference in treatment.
Compare two recent song lyrics about belonging, then connect each writer’s approach to the concerns of the period.
