What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read two accounts of the same event or topic. They identify shared facts and differences in detail, order, emphasis, word choice, and viewpoint. They support the comparison with evidence from both texts.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how each author shapes the reader's understanding through selected details, word choice, and emphasis. The explanation uses accurate evidence from both accounts.

Common Misconceptions

Students often write two separate summaries instead of making direct comparisons. They may compare the events themselves, assume one differing account is false, or discuss only obvious format differences.

How to Assess It

Give students two short accounts of the Boston Tea Party. Ask them to name one shared detail and one difference in emphasis, using a quoted phrase from each account.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed accounts of one event; students highlight shared facts in green and each author's unique emphasis in another color.

  2. Use the prompt: Which account makes the event seem more justified? Students cite one wording choice from each text.

  3. Create excerpt cards from two accounts; teams sort them by author, then explain the clues that guided each choice.

  4. Students compare a local museum plaque with a textbook account and note differences in details, tone, and emphasis.
