What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read two sources about one event, one from someone who experienced it and one written later. They compare details, viewpoints, and evidence, then explain how each writer’s access shapes the account.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student correctly identifies who experienced the event and who learned about it from other sources. They cite details to explain differences in perspective, information, and emphasis.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think any text using “I” is a firsthand account, even when the writer did not witness the event. They may assume firsthand accounts are always accurate or list differences without citing evidence.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Give students a diary entry and a textbook paragraph about the same event. Ask them to label each source and cite one meaningful difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs four source cards about one event, then have them sort, label, and match firsthand accounts with later reports.

  2. Ask students to write: How did each writer’s access to the event affect the details included?

  3. Play Source Detective by revealing short excerpts and awarding points for correct labels supported by a clue from the text.

  4. Compare a student’s account of a school event with the newsletter recap, noting differences in details, viewpoint, and purpose.
