What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine literary and visual works created within the same movement and time period. They compare themes, styles, techniques, purposes, and responses to historical events using specific evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify meaningful similarities and differences in theme, style, technique, and purpose. They support each comparison with specific details and connect those choices to the movement and time period.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume works from one movement express identical ideas or use identical styles. They may list surface details without explaining how historical context, technique, or purpose shapes each work.

How to Assess It

Show students a poem and painting from the same movement. Ask them to name one shared feature, one difference, and one supporting detail from each work.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed poems, paintings, and feature cards from the Harlem Renaissance, then have them sort and justify matches.

  2. Ask students to write which work best represents the movement’s goals, using one detail from each work.

  3. Play comparison relay, with teams adding accurate similarities, differences, and evidence to a shared chart without repeating an entry.

  4. Compare a movement’s published work with a current song, mural, or social media campaign addressing a similar public concern.
