What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather background information that helps them understand a text, such as its time period, place, author, audience, or related issue. They choose the details that matter most and explain why.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an unfamiliar text, students can identify two or three contextual factors and explain how each affects meaning. They can separate useful information from facts that are interesting but unrelated.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list every background fact they find or assume an author’s biography is always relevant. They may treat prior knowledge as proof or confuse a text’s setting with its broader context.

How to Assess It

Give students a short editorial and three background facts. Ask, “Which two facts best help explain the editorial’s message, and why?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Post a poem with six context cards; pairs sort them into helpful, possibly helpful, and distracting, then defend one choice.

  2. After reading a speech, ask, “Which background detail changes your understanding most, and what line does it clarify?”

  3. Play Context Match: teams pair short passages with background notes and earn points only when they explain the connection.

  4. Compare two product reviews, then research each reviewer’s audience and publication date to decide which context affects credibility.
