What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use details, patterns, and prior events to anticipate what may appear next in a text. They track each prediction and revise it as new evidence appears.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make a reasonable prediction and support it with specific details from the text. As they read, they record whether new evidence confirms, changes, or disproves that prediction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat predictions as guesses based only on personal experience. They may also hold onto an early prediction after new details contradict it or summarize what already happened instead of anticipating what comes next.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage with the final paragraph hidden. Ask them to predict what comes next, cite two clues, then revise after reading the ending.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Post pages of a short story around the room, and have students add sticky-note predictions before moving to each new page.

  2. Pause before a key event and ask, "What will happen next, and which two details make your prediction reasonable?"

  3. Play Prediction Relay, where teams read passage sections, record predictions, and earn points for evidence use and thoughtful revisions.

  4. Read a weather alert or sports preview, then predict the next update and compare the prediction with the published follow-up.
