What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students preview a text before reading it closely. They use headings, captions, charts, and opening sentences to choose sections that match a question or reading purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students quickly identify the parts of a text most likely to answer a given question. They name the features that guided their choice and explain which sections need closer reading.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read every word instead of previewing for a purpose. They may rely only on bold print and overlook captions, charts, introductions, and section headings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a two-page article and ask, “Which section would best answer this question, and what text feature guided you there?”

Ways to Teach It
Place sticky notes on headings, captions, charts, and opening sentences, then sort them by how each feature helps a reader.
Ask students to write: “Where would you look first to find the author’s main claim, and why?”
Run a text-feature race where teams locate a date, definition, example, and key claim without reading the full article.
Have students preview a restaurant menu, bus schedule, or product guide to locate specific information under a time limit.
