What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine informational texts to find the central point and the facts and details that develop it. They also describe how the writer ends the text and makes it feel complete.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can mark the central point, relevant facts, and supporting details in a short text. They can explain how the writer organizes information and creates a clear ending.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an interesting detail as the central point. They may treat opinions as facts or think a final sentence always provides an effective ending.

How to Assess It

Give students a short informational paragraph. Ask them to underline its central point, circle two supporting facts, and explain how the ending wraps up the information.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cut-up article and have them sort sentences into central point, facts, supporting details, and ending.

  2. Ask students to explain which sentence best states an article’s central point and support their choice with two details.

  3. Play Technique Match by having teams match paragraph cards with labels for central point, fact, detail, or ending.

  4. Compare a school announcement and a product information page, then identify how each presents facts and finishes its message.
