What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify at least two perspectives in one text and track how each develops. They explain how the perspectives contrast, connect, or influence one another using text evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can track each perspective from the beginning, middle, and end of a text. They use specific details to explain changes, contrasts, and influence between perspectives.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse perspective with the main idea or their own opinion. They may name two viewpoints but not trace changes or interactions. Some assume the narrator and author share the same perspective.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short scene with two characters. Ask them to identify each perspective, cite one detail for each, and explain one interaction between them.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two colors of sticky notes to mark each character's perspective, then arrange the notes in text order on chart paper.
Ask students to write: How does one character's perspective challenge or change another character's thinking? Use two details.
Play Perspective Match: students pair evidence cards with the correct speaker, then explain how one speaker's words influence another.
Read a news article quoting two people, then chart what each person believes and how their statements respond to each other.
