What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify choices such as headings, sections, sequence, captions, charts, and repeated elements. They explain how those choices guide readers and help the writer achieve a purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students point to specific structural or visual choices and explain how each guides the reader. They judge whether a choice works and support that judgment with text evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a heading, chart, or section without explaining its effect. They may assume every feature helps, or confuse the topic with the writer’s purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students a one-page article with headings, a sidebar, and a caption. Ask which feature best supports the writer’s purpose and why.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up article and ask them to arrange the title, sections, image, caption, and sidebar for clear reading.

  2. Ask students to write which text feature they would remove, then explain how that change would affect readers and purpose.

  3. Play Feature Match by pairing cards showing headings, charts, captions, or repetition with cards describing their effects on readers.

  4. Compare a restaurant menu and its online version, then identify how layout choices help customers find information and make decisions.
