What Students Need to Do: Students work with classmates to agree on expectations, set a clear goal, and plan roles and steps. They help the group stay focused, solve problems, and finish shared work.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students help set clear norms, a shared goal, roles, steps, and check-in points before work begins. During work, they invite input, track progress, and redirect the group respectfully.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat norms as teacher rules instead of agreements the group creates. They may confuse a broad goal with a clear outcome, or think facilitating means controlling every decision.
How to Assess It: Give groups eight minutes to plan a class podcast episode. Collect a team sheet listing three norms, one measurable goal, assigned roles, and two progress checks.

Lesson moves

Teams build a paper tower after setting three norms, one goal, roles, and check-in times, then revise their plan after testing.
Read two sample group plans and write which one would keep a team productive, citing two specific features.
Give teams collaboration problem cards, have one student lead a 60-second solution talk, then rotate facilitators.
Teams plan a school book drive by setting a target, assigning tasks, scheduling check-ins, and choosing how to track donations.
