What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize writing so readers can follow ideas and find information easily. They select structures and text features that match the audience and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a structure that fits the purpose, such as cause and effect, chronology, or problem and solution. They use headings, paragraphs, lists, captions, and visuals to guide readers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a structure because it looks familiar, not because it fits the purpose. They may add headings, lists, or images that do not help readers find or understand information.
How to Assess It
- Give students a mixed-up one-page article. Ask them to reorder it, add two useful text features, and explain how each choice helps readers.

Ask students to compare two layouts of the same text and write which one better serves its audience and why.
Play Structure Sort by matching short passages with chronology, compare and contrast, cause and effect, or problem and solution cards.
Redesign a school event flyer using headings, bullet points, bold print, and a clear order for students and families.
