What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use text clues, structure, genre patterns, and prior knowledge to anticipate what may follow. They record predictions, check them against new details, and revise their thinking when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make specific, reasonable predictions and support them with details from the text. As they read, they compare each prediction with new evidence and explain why it should be confirmed, revised, or rejected.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a prediction as a guess based only on personal opinion. They may also cling to an early prediction after the text provides conflicting evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage that stops before a key development. Ask them to predict what follows, cite two clues, and name one detail that could change their prediction.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up article, pause before each section, and have them record a prediction before revealing the next piece.

  2. Ask students to explain which matters more for a prediction, text evidence, genre patterns, or background knowledge, using a shared passage.

  3. Run a prediction ladder game where teams earn points for specific predictions, strong evidence, and accurate revisions after each paragraph.

  4. Compare predictions made while reading a news report with later updates, then discuss how journalists signal likely developments.
