What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how writers shape tone, word choice, evidence, organization, and format for particular readers and goals. They use those choices when creating their own texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the intended audience and purpose, then connect specific choices in tone, evidence, organization, and language to both. They create texts whose choices consistently fit the readers and intended effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify an audience but not explain how specific choices address that audience. They may confuse topic with purpose or assume formal language works for every reader.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short school announcement and ask them to rewrite it for new students. They must label two changes and explain how each fits the audience.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups one message and three audience cards, then have them revise the wording, evidence, and format for each audience.
Ask students to compare two advertisements for the same product and explain which audience each targets using three details.
Play Audience Switch by drawing random audience and purpose cards, then revising a sentence in 60 seconds to fit both.
Have students rewrite a school policy as an email to families, a student poster, and a note to staff.
