What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find a familiar word inside a longer word and separate it from endings such as s, ed, and ing. They add endings to make words and use the changed word correctly in a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given jumped, a student identifies jump and ed without guessing from the whole word. The student builds jumps, jumped, and jumping, then explains how each ending changes the sentence meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think each form is a completely new word. They may call the ending part of the root or remove letters that belong to the root. Some read every ed ending as /ed/ and miss its meaning.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, give play, plays, played, and playing. Students circle the shared word part, underline each ending, and complete: Yesterday I ___.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root word cards and s, ed, and ing tiles, then have them build and read every possible word.
Students write three sentences showing how play, played, and playing tell different things about an action.
Play an ending sort with word cards, placing each under s, ed, or ing and naming the root aloud.
Read a classroom schedule and photo captions, then highlight words with endings and identify when each action happens.
