What Students Need to Do: Students identify Roman ideas such as representative government, a senate, written law, civic duty, and limits on power. They explain how American leaders adapted these ideas rather than copying Rome exactly.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can connect specific Roman institutions or principles to features of the U.S. government. The student can also explain a key difference, such as citizenship rules, elections, or government powers.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse Rome’s republic with Greek direct democracy. They may assume the Roman and U.S. senates had identical powers or that all Roman residents could participate in government.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name two U.S. government features influenced by Rome. For each, explain the Roman connection and one way the United States changed it.

Lesson moves

Give groups Roman and U.S. government feature cards, then have them build and defend an influence map using string and chart paper.
Write: Which Roman republican idea most shaped the U.S. government, and what changed when Americans adopted it?
Play a matching relay with cards for the Roman Senate, written laws, civic duty, U.S. Senate, Constitution, and voting.
Compare a current U.S. Senate vote with a Roman Senate decision, noting who participated, what powers senators held, and key limits.
