What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain that credit lets a borrower buy something now and pay later. They identify principal and interest, compare total repayment costs, and describe why payments must be made on time.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can compare cash and credit options for one purchase. The student calculates the total repayment, identifies the extra cost, and explains one consequence of missing payments.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think credit is free money or that the monthly payment is the full cost. They may also confuse credit cards with debit cards or assume all borrowing is harmful.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “A $40 purchase costs $45 when repaid. What is the extra $5, and why might someone still use credit?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs price cards, play money, and credit slips, then have them compare paying now with repaying a larger amount later.

  2. Ask students to write: “When might borrowing be helpful, and when might it cause a problem?”

  3. Have teams sort scenario cards into responsible or risky credit use, then defend each choice in one sentence.

  4. Compare two pretend bicycle payment plans and have students choose one based on total cost, not just the monthly payment.
