What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify mass as the amount of matter in an object and weight as the gravitational force acting on it. They use kilograms for mass and newtons for weight. They explain that weight changes with gravity while mass stays constant.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly compare an object's mass and weight on Earth, the Moon, or another planet. They use W = mg to show that weight is proportional to mass when gravity is constant. They include correct units and explain their reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use mass and weight as if they mean the same thing. They may think mass changes when gravity changes or report weight in kilograms. Some also think heavier objects experience a different gravitational acceleration than lighter objects in the same place.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 10 kg toolbox moves from Earth, g = 9.8 N/kg, to the Moon, g = 1.6 N/kg. State its mass and weight in each place, then explain the change.
