What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine claims for testable questions, measurable evidence, repeatable methods, peer review, and willingness to change with new evidence. They explain whether a claim follows scientific practices or relies on testimonials, vague language, or ideas that cannot be tested.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can classify an unfamiliar claim and cite at least two features that support the decision. The student can identify what evidence or test would make the claim more credible.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think science is always correct or that any new or unpopular idea is pseudoscience. They may treat personal stories as equal to controlled evidence. They may also judge a claim by a polished website or an expert title instead of checking methods and data.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A bracelet company says its product balances body energy and improves concentration, based on customer testimonials. Classify the claim, cite two clues, and describe one fair test.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed claim cards and evidence cards to sort into scientific, pseudoscientific, or not enough information, then require one reason per card.
Ask students to write: Why are testimonials weaker than controlled evidence, and when can a personal observation still help start an investigation?
Play Evidence Detective: teams earn points by spotting testable claims, missing controls, cherry-picked data, and appeals to celebrity authority.
Compare labels and online ads for supplements, then list each measurable claim, evidence offered, and information needed before buying.
