The Standard

Assess how technology is essential to science for such purposes as access to outer space and other remote locations, sample collection, measurement, data collection and storage, computation, and communication of information.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how specific tools help scientists explore places people cannot easily reach, collect reliable data, and share findings. They choose suitable technology for an investigation and justify the choice using its abilities and limits.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a Mars mission or deep-ocean study, students can match each research need with an appropriate tool and explain why it fits. They can trace how a sample or measurement becomes stored, analyzed, and communicated data.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think scientific technology means only rockets or computers. They may assume tools produce conclusions automatically, or that remotely collected data are instant and error-free.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: A rover will test Martian soil for signs of past water. Name tools for collecting, measuring, storing, and communicating data, then explain one likely limitation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a remote sampling grabber from craft sticks, tape, and cups, then collect gravel without crossing a marked line and record design limits.

  2. Write a mission plan explaining which tools scientists need to study an active volcano without approaching the crater.

  3. Play Mission Match by pairing cards showing research needs with tool cards, then earn points by defending each match.

  4. Examine a current hurricane satellite image and identify how sensors, computers, data storage, and communication helped create and share it.
