What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break a problem into smaller repeated steps and identify the value or case where the process begins. They carry out the steps, track results, and decide when the process should stop.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies a starting case, states the repeated rule, and uses it accurately. The student can trace each step, explain when the process stops, and compare it with a direct method.

Common Misconceptions

Students may omit the starting value, so the rule cannot generate a sequence. They may confuse using the previous term with using the term number, or repeat a step without checking when to stop.

How to Assess It

Give the sequence 3, 7, 15, 31. Ask students to write a starting value and recursive rule, then find the next two terms.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use linking cubes to build a growing pattern, then record the starting case and the rule connecting each stage to the next.

  2. Ask students to explain when repeating one step is clearer than using a direct formula, using a sequence as evidence.

  3. Play a rule-tracing relay where teams compute successive outputs, check errors, and identify the stopping condition.

  4. Model a savings account by repeatedly adding monthly interest and a fixed deposit, then compare the result with a spreadsheet calculation.
