Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.F.2.4

MathGrades 9–12Identify and describe the effects of transformations on functions. Create new functions given transformations.

The Standard

Given the graph or table of values of two or more transformations of a function, state the type of transformation and find the values of the real number that defines the transformation.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare graphs or tables for a base function and its transformed versions. They identify shifts, reflections, stretches, or compressions and determine the real number controlling each change.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student matches corresponding inputs, outputs, intercepts, and key points. The student names each transformation and finds its signed shift or scale factor, including combined changes.

Common Misconceptions

Students often reverse the sign of a horizontal shift or treat it like a vertical shift. They may confuse reflection across the x-axis with reflection across the y-axis. They also use output ratios when a vertical shift produced the change.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: For x = -1, 0, 1, let f(x) = 1, 0, 1, g(x) = 3, 2, 3, and h(x) = -2, 0, -2. Name each change from f and give its parameter.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of function graphs on transparencies. Students slide, flip, and stretch one overlay, then record the transformation and parameter.

  2. Prompt students to explain how matching points reveal a horizontal or vertical change, then compare explanations with a partner.

  3. Run a card sort matching base graphs, transformed graphs, equations, transformation names, and parameter values.

  4. Use a sensor calibration table where g(t) = 1.5f(t) + 2, and have students interpret the scale factor and offset.
