What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a distance or tolerance statement into a one-variable absolute value inequality. They solve it and show the solution with inequalities, interval notation, or a number line graph.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students translate phrases such as “within,” “at most,” and “more than” into absolute value inequalities. They solve correctly, write interval or inequality notation, and graph matching endpoints and shading.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every absolute value inequality as two separate inequalities joined by “or.” They may also forget to reverse an inequality when multiplying by a negative or use open and closed endpoints incorrectly.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A machine part may differ from 12 cm by at most 0.4 cm. Write, solve, and graph an inequality.”

Ways to Teach It
Mark solution sets with tape on a floor number line, then compare graphs for |x − 5| < 3 and |x − 5| > 3.
Ask students to explain why “within 4 miles of school” produces an intersection, while “more than 4 miles away” produces two rays.
Play a card match using context cards, absolute value inequalities, solution statements, and number line graphs.
Use a temperature tolerance label, such as 37°C within 0.5°C, and have students write the acceptable temperature range.
