What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a situation about distance from a target value into an absolute value equation. They solve by creating two linear equations and interpret both solutions in the original situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the center value and the stated distance, then represent them with an absolute value equation. They solve both cases, check each answer, and explain what the solutions mean in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat absolute value bars like parentheses or write only one solution. They may attach the plus or minus sign to the wrong expression. Some try to solve an equation such as |x - 4| = -2 instead of recognizing that it has no solution.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A machine part is exactly 0.3 millimeter longer or shorter than 12 millimeters. Write an absolute value equation and solve it.”

Ways to Teach It
Make a masking-tape number line, then have students stand at both locations matching a given center and distance card.
Ask students to explain why |x - 8| = 3 has two solutions but |x - 8| = -3 has none.
Play a card-matching game connecting context cards, absolute value equations, solution pairs, and number line graphs.
Give product tolerance labels and have students write equations for measurements exactly at each allowed boundary.
