Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.AR.2.2

MathGrades 9–12Write, solve and graph linear equations, functions and inequalities in one and two variables.

The Standard

Write a linear two-variable equation to represent the relationship between two quantities from a graph, a written description or a table of values within a mathematical or real-world context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the rate of change and starting value from a graph, table, or situation. They define the variables and use those values to build an equation connecting the two quantities.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly calculate the rate of change and determine the value when the input is zero. They define both variables, write an equivalent equation such as y = mx + b, and verify it with given points.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide changes in the wrong order or switch the roles of the two variables. They often use a table’s first output as the starting value, even when the first input is not zero. Some assume every relationship is proportional and leave out a nonzero constant term.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: A table contains (2, 11), (5, 23), and (8, 35). Write an equation relating x and y, then label the rate and starting value.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs linking cubes to build towers with heights 5, 8, 11, and 14, then record inputs and write the matching equation.

  2. Ask students to compare y = 3x + 4 and y = 4x + 3, then explain which represents a $4 fee plus $3 per item.

  3. Play Equation Match with cards showing graphs, tables, situations, and equations, and have teams assemble sets representing the same relationship.

  4. Show a taxi fare with a $2.50 pickup charge and $1.80 per mile, then have students define variables and model total cost.
