What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the quantities, define variables, and translate a limit or comparison into an inequality. From a graph, they use the boundary line and shaded side to write the inequality. They decide whether the boundary is included.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a context, a student writes an inequality with correct coefficients, inequality symbol, and variable meanings. Given a graph, the student identifies the boundary equation, includes or excludes the boundary correctly, and tests a point to confirm the shading.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse the inequality symbol when translating phrases such as “at least” and “no more than.” They may confuse solid and dashed boundary lines or shade the wrong side. They may also ignore that real-world quantities cannot be negative.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A club can spend at most $180 on $12 adult tickets and $8 student tickets. Define variables, write an inequality, and determine whether 10 adult tickets and 8 student tickets fit the budget.”

Ways to Teach It
Tape a coordinate grid on the floor; students place a rope boundary, then stand at points that satisfy 2x + y ≤ 8.
Show a shaded graph and ask students to explain how the boundary style and one test point determine the inequality.
Run a card sort matching context cards, inequality cards, and graph cards, with students checking each match using a test point.
Have students choose quantities of two snack packs under a $50 budget, write the inequality, and graph all possible purchases.
