Florida B.E.S.T. MA.8.NSO.1.3

Math8th GradeSolve problems involving rational numbers, including numbers in scientific notation, and extend the understanding of rational numbers to irrational numbers.

The Standard

Extend previous understanding of the Laws of Exponents to include integer exponents. Apply the Laws of Exponents to evaluate numerical expressions and generate equivalent numerical expressions, limited to integer exponents and rational number bases, with procedural fluency.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use exponent laws with positive, zero, and negative integer exponents. They simplify and evaluate expressions with nonzero rational bases and rewrite them in equivalent forms.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students simplify expressions with products, quotients, powers of powers, zero exponents, and negative exponents. They produce equivalent forms and accurate values without expanding every power into repeated multiplication.

Common Misconceptions

Students often read a negative exponent as making the value negative, or claim that a number to the zero power equals zero. They may multiply exponents when they should add them, or apply exponent laws across addition and subtraction.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Simplify ((3/4)^-2)^2 ÷ (3/4)^-1 using positive exponents, evaluate it, and name the law used at each step.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build an exponent-law sort with cards such as (2/3)^3(2/3)^-5, then match each expression to its simplified value.

  2. Ask, “Why does a^-3 equal 1/a^3?” and have students justify the pattern using a table of descending exponents.

  3. Play an exponent-law relay where teams simplify one step, label the law used, and check the previous player’s work.

  4. Model a quantity that halves each hour, then use positive, zero, and negative time values to interpret powers of 1/2.
